This weekend featured an exciting clash as Calgary, boasting one of the highest-scoring offenses in U Sports, faced off against Manitoba, renowned for having one of the top-ranked defenses in the nation.
Last night, the Dinos came out firing, and the Bisons couldn’t match the defensive intensity they displayed the night before. Nate Petrone, a “Player of the Year” frontrunner, couldn’t be contained for a second straight night, putting up a game-high 36 points to lead Calgary.
“It was a classic battle of great offense versus great defense. Offense wins round two,” said Coach Schepp.
The Herd trailed by as many as 24 points in the third quarter, down 76-52, but a spirited effort from the bench sparked a rally. The Bisons trimmed the lead to just five points with four minutes remaining, but the Dinos responded with clutch baskets and key defensive stops to close out the game.
The Dinos showcased their efficiency by shooting 51% from the field, compared to Bisons 41%, and controlled the boards with a 44-34 rebounding advantage.
Despite the loss, the Bisons made the Dinos work for every point and earned respect for securing a hard-fought split against one of Canada’s top-ranked teams.
“Daren had an outstanding weekend for us,” Coach Schepp praised. Daren Watts (pictured above) led the Bisons with 27 points, shooting an impressive 10-16 from the field and 5-8 from beyond the arc.
The #2-ranked Dinos improved to 9-3 on the season, while our #10 Bisons now hold a 10-2 record, keeping them in a tight race at the top of the Canada West Prairie Division with just four weeks remaining in the regular season.
