Honour Roll Guidelines
1.
Purpose
The HERD HOOPS HONOUR ROLL recognizes the
outstanding achievements and contributions of individuals and teams to the UM Bisons
Men’s Basketball program. This includes accomplishments made during their time
as players, coaches, or staff, as well as ongoing contributions as alumni in
support of the program.
While many alumni have notable achievements beyond the Bisons,
only accomplishments and contributions directly related to the Bisons Men’s
Basketball program are considered for this recognition.
2.
Eligibility Guidelines
A. Categories for Induction
1. PLAYERS:
Recognizing players who have demonstrated outstanding achievements.
2. BISON PILLARS:
Bison Pillars represent one of the highest honours in the program. They are
exceptional individuals - dedicated players, coaches, and staff - who continued
to contribute in ways that profoundly strengthened the men’s basketball
program. They stand as the true cornerstones of Bison men’s basketball.
3. BUILDERS:
Builders are individuals whose dedication has been instrumental to the men’s
basketball program - whether as coaches, managers, or staff who excelled in
their roles, or as alumni, supporters and sponsors whose generosity and
contributions strengthened the program and ensured its ongoing success.
4. TEAMS:
Teams that achieved remarkable success.
B. General Eligibility
1.
PLAYERS
·
Must be at least five years removed from
their last university game.
·
Consideration will be given to individual
accomplishments, including statistics, awards, records, leadership, and overall
impact on the team.
·
Individual achievements will be considered,
including:
o
All-Canadian selections (First Team, Second
Team, or Honorable Mention).
o
National Tournament awards such as Most
Valuable Player, All-Star, and R.W. Pugh Fair Play.
o
National awards such as Male Athlete of Year,
Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Student-Athlete
Community Service, and All-Rookie Team.
o
Conference All-Star selections (First Team,
Second Team, Third Team, Honourable Mention).
o
Conference Awards such as Player of the Year,
Defensive Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Ken Shields Student-Athlete
Community Award, All-Rookie Team.
2.
BISON PILLARS
·
Bison
Pillars are alumni who were players, coaches or staff.
· Bison Pillars significant contributions may include, but not limited to: mentoring, alumni engagement, program development, coaching, fundraising, financial support, community-building initiatives - or any combination of these - that have advanced the long-term success and visibility of Bisons basketball.
3.
BUILDERS
·
Builders are devoted individuals whose
commitment has been essential to the men’s basketball program. This category
includes:
o
Coaches, managers, and staff whose
exceptional efforts and performance played a vital role in supporting the team.
For coaches, recognition such as National and Conference Coach of the Year
honours, as well as win-loss records, will be considered.
o
Alumni, supporters and sponsors whose
generosity and contributions strengthened the program and ensured its continued
success.
4.
TEAMS
·
Teams that have demonstrated exceptional
achievement through national championships, conference titles, undefeated
seasons, or other notable accomplishments.
·
A minimum of five years must have passed
since the team’s recognized season of achievement.
C. Character and Conduct
·
Inductee candidates should exemplify the
values of sportsmanship, leadership, and integrity, serving as positive
representatives of the university both on and off the court.
3.
Nomination Process
- Who Can Nominate:
- Nominations
may be submitted by alumni, current/former staff, teammates, or community
members.
- Nomination Submission:
- Submissions
must include a detailed summary of the nominee's achievements and
contributions.
- Submission
must be completed using the official form available on the Herd Hoops
Club website: Herd Hoops Club
- Nomination Deadline:
- Nominations
must be received no later than March 31 for the subsequent season. Late
submissions may not be considered for that year’s induction cycle.
4.
Selection Process
- Selection Committee:
- The
Committee will review all nominations, verify the achievements, and
evaluate the merits of each candidate.
- Voting:
- A
majority by the Committee is required for induction.
- The
number of inductions may be capped annually.
5.
Induction Ceremony
- Inductees
will be honored at a Bisons men's home basketball game.
- Honorees
will receive a commemorative award and permanent recognition in the Herd
Hoops Club Honour Roll digital display.
- Family
members of posthumous inductees will be invited to participate.
This document outlines the
standards and process to celebrate the rich history and contributions to the
University of Manitoba Men’s Basketball program through the Herd Hoops Honour
Roll.
