ALUMNI NEWS: The Inaugural Zak Hirshman Scholarship

Zak Hirshman passed away on October 11, 2022.

After playing high school basketball in Regina, Zak moved to Winnipeg to play for the University of Manitoba Bisons. He played five seasons (1989-1995) with the Herd, becoming an integral part of several nationally ranked teams in the early 1990s. His exceptional work ethic and positive attitude left a lasting impact on his teammates.

Zak was truly larger than life—not just in stature, but in personality, humor, and kindness. He had a unique ability to connect with everyone he met, building genuine relationships. Those who knew him will always remember his giant smile, warm hugs, deep laugh, and unwavering authenticity.

In his memory, teammates, friends and family came together to establish the Zak Hirshman Scholarship.

Last evening, Zak’s family proudly presented the Zak Hirshman Scholarship to Bisons player Manyang Tong.
