Bisons Finish Pre-Season on a High Note with Convincing 96–70 Win Over Calgary
Our Bisons wrapped up their pre-season schedule in impressive fashion Friday evening, October 23, defeating the Calgary Dinos 96–70 at the University of Winnipeg's Duckworth Centre.
The victory provided a confidence boost for the young Herd as they prepare to open Canada West regular-season play next weekend.
The opening 15 minutes were closely contested before Manitoba began finding its offensive rhythm, building a seven-point lead in the second quarter. Calgary responded with a pair of late three-pointers to narrow the Bisons' advantage to 41–38 at halftime.
The turning point came in the third quarter, when Manitoba stepped up its defensive intensity and outscored Calgary 23–18. The Bisons carried that momentum into the final quarter, dominating 32–14 to secure the convincing 26-point victory.
Balanced Contributions Lead the Way
Steven Vigilance led the Bisons with 17 points, while Samuel Desrochers continued his impressive pre-season play, contributing 15 points and making an impact at both ends of the floor.
Segun Akin-Akinbulumo delivered a strong performance with a double-double, recording 16 points and 10 rebounds. His return to form was particularly encouraging after dealing with knee problems throughout the pre-season.
Brandt Lenz added 12 points, while Owen Unrau contributed 10. The Bisons also received valuable contributions throughout their lineup, with 14 players seeing action.
Manitoba shot an impressive 57.8% from the field, including 43.3% from three-point range, while outrebounding Calgary 47–35.
Coach Schepp Pleased with Team's Progress
Head Coach Kirby Schepp was encouraged by his team's performance, particularly its defensive effort in the second half and the contributions throughout the lineup.
"We came out much more aggressive defensively in the third and pulled away," said Schepp. "Sam Desrochers was once again very good at both ends, making winning plays all over the court."
Schepp was also pleased to see the continued development of his younger players.
"It was nice to see rookie Bruno Van Bewer and Owen Unrau get their first points."
Reflecting on the victory, Schepp added:
"It was a nice way to end the pre-season with a solid win versus a Canada West opponent. Very happy we got balanced contributions across the roster."
Next Up: The Winnipeg Wesmen!
With their pre-season schedule complete, the Bisons now turn their attention to the Canada West regular-season opener against their crosstown rivals, the Winnipeg Wesmen, on Friday, October 30, at 8:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.
