Bisons Alumnus Terry Garrow Champions Father’s Legacy

Terry Garrow, a former University of Manitoba Bisons All-Canadian and Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, is on a decades-long mission to have his father, Alex Garrow, inducted into the Canadian Basketball Hall of Fame.

Alex Garrow was a trailblazing Indigenous athlete who played NCAA basketball at University of Alabama during the era of segregation and later competed at a national level in Canada. Despite a promising career cut short by injury, he earned recognition as a standout athlete and pioneer at a time when Indigenous players were rarely acknowledged.

Alex Garrow played at the University of Alabama beginning in 1956, when he earned a basketball scholarship and had a standout freshman season.

For more than 25 years, Terry has worked to build the case for his father’s enshrinement, emphasizing both his athletic accomplishments and his impact as a barrier-breaking figure in Canadian basketball history. Support from former players and coaches continues to grow, with many calling his induction long overdue.

Terry will be in Winnipeg this weekend promoting his father’s legacy at the Battle for Turtle Island tournament, as momentum builds toward a potential Hall of Fame nomination in 2027.
