John Brown (pictured in the suit on the far right) served as the manager of the Bison Men’s Basketball team from 1966 to 1971, and calling his contributions extraordinary would be an understatement.
During his tenure, the Bison East Gym was packed to capacity—often beyond it—with fans spilling onto the floor around the court. While the team’s success played a role in drawing crowds, it was John’s promotional genius that truly transformed the game-day experience.
He created an electrifying atmosphere with innovative promotions, including game programs filled with coupons for free items at Pembina Highway restaurants, a Bison Bursary draw at every game, and concerts featuring some of the biggest rock acts of the era.
His initiatives also introduced the Bison Bug, Freshie Week festivities, and the legendary Bison Beer Bashes—events that have since become the stuff of urban legend.
