Bisons Fall Short of Wildcard Spot, But Season Offers Plenty to Build On
U Sports announced this morning that the Bisons were not awarded the wildcard entry into the U Sports national tournament, officially ending their hopes of competing at nationals this year. The wildcard spot was ultimately awarded to Concordia, the runner-up in the RSEQ Conference.
Despite the disappointment, the team has plenty to be proud of. They finished first in the 10-team Prairie Division and second overall in Canada West, trailing only Victoria in a competitive 17-team conference. Nationally, they ranked No. 7 out of 47 teams by the end of the regular season—an impressive achievement.
Coach Schepp and his staff maximized the potential of a hardworking and disciplined squad, whose tenacious defense allowed them to go toe-to-toe with the country’s best. However, their lack of size proved to be a key obstacle in taking the next step and defeat these top-tier opponents - something the coaching staff will look to address in the offseason.
The good news? Every player is eligible to return next season, providing a strong foundation for another run at nationals.
